The Nuneaton Society
and the
Nuneaton & North Warwickshire Family History Society

Introduction

The Nuneaton Society is an active society serving the town of Nuneaton (the area covered by the old 1907 Borough before it merged with the neighbouring town of Bedworth). We are dedicated to preserving the built environment, encouraging quality in renewing our townscape, preserving our flora and fauna, protecting our green spaces, improving traffic in the area, providing better local facilities for residents and visitors.

We also take a great deal of interest in our local heritage. We aim to preserve as much as possible of our old town. To disseminate local history and put Nuneaton forward as a place of interest with a great deal to offer anyone who has family or friends in the area.

The areas we cover comprise the ancient parishes of Nuneaton, Chilvers Coton, Stockingford, Weddington, and Caldecote.

Major projects so far completed or in progress are:

  • The preservation of the charity school at Chilvers Coton. An 18th and 19th century School, which is used by local clubs, as an exhibition centre, and has a preserved Victorian schoolroom. A separate trust has been formed to obtain funds to preserve the building and administer it on a day to day basis.

  • Rescue and retention of the archives and documents of Stanley Bros. Ltd, one of the largest brick makers in England whose main works was in Stockingford. A huge deposit of documents has been made with the Warwick County Records Office on indefinite loan from the Society.

  • Society members assisted with the saving of the Manor Hospital in Nuneaton. Nuneaton’s cottage hospital, which has been beautifully refurbished as part of a medical complex off Manor Court Road, Nuneaton.

  • Society members were instrumental in saving the old ironmaster’s house at the Bull Ring, Chilvers Coton, which has been beautifully restored.

  • Every year we have talks, slide shows, events, visits and open days.

We also publish a quarterly newsletter.
